Vehicle Loan Guide 2026: How to Choose Down Payment, Term and Interest

The real cost of 24, 36 and 48-month terms, using a 1.8 million TRY car.

When buying a new car, the biggest decision is often not the car itself but how to finance it. The trio of down payment, term and interest sets both your monthly budget and the total cost. The example below helps you see the decision in numbers.

Example: a 1,800,000 TRY car with 30% down

Say the down payment is 540,000 TRY, the loan is 1,260,000 TRY and monthly interest is 2.89%. Results for three terms are roughly:

  • 24 months: monthly instalment ≈ 73,500 TRY, total interest ≈ 504,000 TRY
  • 36 months: monthly instalment ≈ 56,800 TRY, total interest ≈ 784,000 TRY
  • 48 months: monthly instalment ≈ 48,900 TRY, total interest ≈ 1,085,000 TRY

Going from 24 to 48 months lowers the monthly instalment by about 24,600 TRY, but total interest more than doubles. A short term strains the budget but is cheap; a long term gives relief but costs more.

Three rules for the right balance

  1. The instalment rule: the monthly instalment should not exceed 25-30% of net household income. A higher ratio makes unexpected expenses hard to bear.
  2. Grow the down payment: if you can trade in, your old car's value counts directly towards it; every 100,000 TRY more down saves about 4,500 TRY a month and 62,000 TRY of interest over 36 months.
  3. Ask about early repayment terms: being able to close the loan early gives flexibility if rates fall or your income rises. Early repayment fees must stay within legal limits.

Know the BDDK limits

The maximum loan ratio and term limits for vehicle loans, by vehicle price, are set by BDDK regulations and change from time to time. For high-priced vehicles a larger down payment may therefore be required. Our sales adviser shares current limits in writing at the quote stage.

Do not forget insurance

Comprehensive cover is usually required with a loan, and first-year premiums can run to 2-4% of the vehicle price. Add this item to the instalment when planning your budget.

Early repayment and restructuring

When your income rises or interest rates fall, closing the loan early sharply reduces total interest. Ask in advance about the early repayment fee rate and how it is calculated in the loan agreement. If you struggle with instalments you can ask your bank to restructure, but since this often raises total cost it should be a last resort.

Quick check before applying

  • Aim for an instalment of no more than 25-30% of your monthly net income
  • Compare written offers from at least three banks
  • Add file fees, life insurance and comprehensive cover cost to the total
  • Learn your trade-in value in advance and count it towards the down payment

To try your own numbers, use the vehicle loan calculator on our site and share the result with our sales adviser at the showroom to compare offers from different banks.
